We just talked to Andres and the major takeaway was that he gave it all he had especially with meet announcer Gary Cohen getting everyone fired up, edging him on towards 4 minutes and the crowd going nuts !

Coach Plasencia - "When I saw how strong he looked with 150 to go I knew it was going to be fast. The EFFORT was intense. He was so determined every step of the race. He was so focused as if he had tunnel vision. It was absolutely amazing to watch."

Meet Announcer Gary Cohen- "Anticipation was high for the Metro Conference East Boy's 1,600 meters as there were rumors that Andres Arroyo would be going to lay down a fast time even if it ended up being a solo effort up front. Dark clouds threatened after a few races and meet director, Winter Park AD Mike Brown, announced that the 1,600 meter races would close the action before the meet was suspended until the following day.

The gun went off with a bit of light rain falling and Arroyo assumed the lead right at the break after the first curve. He split 29 second for 200 meters and was under 59 seconds after the first lap with a lead that had stretched to 30 meters. 'Andres Arroyo is under 4:00 pace,' I announced from the press box.

During the next two laps I kept the crowd going strong as I encouraged them to clap and cheer while explaining how Andres was now running with good form amd quick turnover as he worked to maintain his pace without any help. 'Andres is still under 4:00 pace,' I exclaimed as he passed 800 meters in 1:59.'

The crowd was going crazy and I continued giving encouragement, half to the fans and half to Arroyo. He hit 1,200 meters in 3:01 and I lost part of my voice as I was now half announcer and half cheerleader. Andres pushed hard all of the way around the final circuit and took aim on his fastest time ever.

The crowd was cheering as I gave the countdown from the booth... '3:58, 3:59, 4:00, 4:01, 4:02, 4:03...' Andres won by 22 seconds in 4:04.45, the third fastest time in Florida high school history and the fastest prep time in the United States this year. It was an exciting four minutes and an honor to call the race."
